The FIA, in conjunction with Pirelli, has ordered three suspensions for the upcoming F1 GP in Qatar following a post-sprint race analysis and investigation.

This was because the edges of the pyramid could damage the sidewall of the tire, causing air loss. Initial investigations by Pirelli and the FIA limited the stint to 20 laps until a decision is made on what will happen to the sprint event on Saturday evening.
Although the sprint event was hampered by the introduction of the safety car, the FIA and Pirelli stuck to their guns, limiting later Grand Prix stints to 18 laps. Three stops weren’t mandatory, but of course 18 laps means there will be at least three stops for him.

Similar to Free Practice 1, this problem may have been caused by high frequency interference between the tire sidewall and the 50mm “pyramid” curb commonly used at this circuit. As a result, the FIA and Pirelli, in consultation with the teams, have decided to implement the following measures for today’s Qatar Grand Prix for safety reasons.
- A mandatory limit of 18 laps of total tyre life per set will be imposed.
- The life of already used tyres will be taken into consideration.
- The FIA and Pirelli will communicate to the teams the remaining available laps for each set of used tyres at their disposal for the race and the criteria used to calculate that number.
- There is no direct mandate for at least three tyre-change pitstops during the race, however this will be a consequence of the above guidelines should the race run its entire race distance.
- Any car deemed to have exceeded the tyre life lap limit will be reported to the Stewards as being run in an unsafe condition.
- This information will be formally communicated to the teams in the Race Directors’ notes and further updates issued as required.
