F1 team leaders say they cannot determine whether relocating General Motors’ powerplants will add value to Andretti Cadillac’s grid bid.
The FIA has approved Andretti Cadillac as the 11th F1 team from 2026, but it is now in the hands of F1 management to discuss the business figures and see if they line up on the grid .
Amid these debates, General Motors has added a new twist to the game. The American giants have announced a power unit transition from 2028, joining the growing club of manufacturers developing F1 power units.
Andretti and Cadillac’s proposal becomes a little more interesting, as a number of models are expected to arrive as early as 2026, and General Motors is just adding to that list. FOM’s decision will be a big one considering the current 10 F1 teams have yet to agree to it.
They remain reluctant to set up another team, and when asked if this move by General Motors would add much value, some F1 team chiefs said they could not decide. Some people say. This is certainly a big step, but bosses are approaching the situation diplomatically.
Some F1 executives say so –
Bruno Famin (Alpine): “I think all new faces need to bring added value. We should avoid diluting the value of the championship. After evaluating a potential new entrant, we have all the numbers, all the data, and all the information we don’t have as a team to evaluate whether X, Y meets Z. , I think they are in the best position to have potential new entrants be the basis for value creation. In the case of General Motors, we have no data at all.I’m very cautious about general rules. I think each case is an individual case and I believe F1 will assess this very well. ”
Franz Tost (AlphaTauri): “I don’t have much to add. As a team, we have no direct influence on whether the 11th team comes or not. Ultimately It will be a decision of FOM and FIA. Everything will have to be evaluated and then we will see. Talking about the 11th team is a story. It’s a different story when you can actually see that there’s something behind a signed contract, but here again the FIA and FOM have to make an assessment. ”
Günter Steiner (Haas): “I think it’s a good idea for a company like General Motors to get into F1, but as a colleague said here, “We need to assess how much value it adds.” “I don’t know, or we don’t know because we don’t share information, and that’s something that needs to be assessed by the FOM. , they’ll get a clear number.” But F1 has 10 strong teams at the moment, which I think devalues them. Why do we need to do that? So, I don’t know if it adds value, but like Franz said, there’s no coordination in this process. we are the audience. ”
