Ex-Super Eagles striker takes charge of Belgian Jupiler League club

Kortrijk’s campaign was poor so we hope Akpara can stem the tide

Former Super Eagles striker Joseph Akpara has been appointed as Kortrijk’s interim coach following the sacking of head coach Glenn de Beck, Soccernet.ng reported.

This season has been a roller coaster for Kortrijk. With just two wins from 16 games, they are at the bottom of the Belgian Jupiler League. They lost 10 games and tied 4 games.

The club are without a win in six games, their last victory coming in October in a surprise victory over league giants Club Brugge. De Bec’s managerial job has been in jeopardy in recent weeks and he was finally sacked on Wednesday following Kortrijk’s 1-0 defeat to RWB Molenbeek on Tuesday.

The club confirmed this through a statement on X Page. It was also announced that Akpara would be appointed interim coach.

This is Akpala’s third time as interim manager in the past six months. He served as interim coach before the start of the season. However, when Kortrijk hired Edward Still, he became his assistant again. However, Still’s tenure was disappointing and he was fired after failing to win his first eight games.

After Still’s dismissal, Akpala took charge for one game, leading the club to victory against Cercle Brugge. Nevertheless, after Kortrijk approved de Bec’s appointment, he returned to his original position.

Unfortunately, De Bec was flattered by the deception, as the win against Club Brugge was his only success.

De Boeck left Kortrijk at the bottom of the Jupiler League standings, seven points off safety. And Akpara will likely hit Kortrijk hard in the match against KVC Westerlo.

The 37-year-old could take the job permanently if he wins this weekend and brings more quality players to the club.
