Carlos Alcaraz reveals diagnosis after injury scare at Rio Open

Carlos Alcaraz revealed the results of an MRI scan on his ankle after the Spaniard was forced to withdraw from Rio de Janeiro after just two games.

Alcaraz played against wild card player Thiago Monteiro in the Brazilian capital on Tuesday and was sent off after twisting his ankle after the second goal of the game.

Fans of the world number two were very anxious and worried that he would not be able to defend his title in Indian Wells next month.

However, Alcaraz seems to have allayed these concerns, confirming that he needs to be ready in time for the Netflix show’s match against Rafael Nadal in Indian Wells and Las Vegas.

“After yesterday’s injury, I underwent an MRI scan on my ankle and found that I have suffered a second-degree lateral sprain and will be out of action for several days,” Alcaraz said on social media. “See you in Las Vegas and Indian Wells!”

The show with Nadal will take place on Sunday, March 3, after which Alcaraz will move to the California desert to begin the Sunshine Double in Indian Wells.

In the baseline…

Fortunately for Carlos Alcaraz, his ankle injury looked much worse than it actually was. It’s been a season of ups and downs for Alcaraz so far, and relatively speaking, Alcaraz, who has impressed very well in recent years, will probably be disappointed with his results so far. But the Wimbledon champion from Indian Wells will probably have more fire in his belly as the defending champion, especially with Jannik Sinner strangling him in the ATP rankings.
