CAF Awards: Uzoho misses out as Mendy, Onana, others get Goalkeeper of the Year nominations

Francis Uzoho has been under intense scrutiny over his performance for the Super Eagles after consistent mistakes that led to goals for Nigeria.

Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Odinaka Uzoho has missed out on nomination for the African Football Confederation’s Goalkeeper of the Year award, reports Soccernet.ng.

The 25-year-old Omonia Nicosia goalkeeper has not played a single game for the club yet this season, but has been named the Super Eagles’ first choice in goal by Jose Peseiro.

Ahead of the annual CAF Awards, African football’s governing body announced the list of nominees for the upcoming awards, but the Nigerian goalkeeper was absent.

Yassin Bounou, who won the Europa League with Sevilla, was nominated after helping Morocco become the first African country to reach the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup.

Manchester United’s Andre Onana was also nominated after he won the Serie A with his former team Inter Milan and helped them reach the UEFA Champions League final, but lost to Josep Guardiola’s treble winners Manchester City.

Egypt’s Mohamed El-Shennawy, Senegal’s Edouard Mendy, Algeria’s Osama Benbot and Mali’s Gigi Diarra are also among the goalkeepers nominated for the prestigious award.

Nigerians at home and abroad urge the NFF to step up scouting for the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping department after the team missed out on major tournaments such as the 2022 FIFA World Cup due to consistent mistakes by the goalkeeper. We asked and encouraged them to do so.
