CAF Awards: Demehin and two other Nigerian players nominated for Young Player of the Year Award

Demehin was eliminated during the Olympic qualifiers in Nigeria’s 4-0 win over Ethiopia in Abuja as the Falcons won 5-0 on aggregate.

Super Falcons centre-back Blessing Oluwatosin Demehin has been nominated for the CAF Young Player of the Year award along with Deborah Abiodun and Ajakai Esther, reports Soccernet.ng.

Demehin, 21, plies her trade with Stade de Reims Women in France and will represent Nigeria at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia/New Zealand.

The young defender formed a great partnership with Alaves’ Osinachi Ohare and supported the Super Falcons’ defense alongside Paris FC’s Chiamaka Nnadoji. We have strengthened our defensive trio.

They worked together to help the Super Falcons reach the round of 16 of the tournament, but were overwhelmed by eventual finalists England in a penalty shootout in Melbourne.

They conceded just two goals in four games, kept three clean sheets, and were hailed as one of the cleanest defensive teams during the tournament.

The Stade de Reims defender’s calmness and composure on the ball attracted attention and she was nominated for the Young Player of the Year award by Africa’s football governing body.

Rivers Angels striker Deborah Abiodun, who represented the Super Falcons at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, has been nominated along with 20-year-old Esther Ajakei, who has agreed to a trade with Lobo Queens.

Young talents from other African countries were also nominated. Ghanaian duo Comfort Yeboah and Mary Amponsah have been nominated.

Morocco’s Nesir El Chad, South Africa’s Tuberhire Chamase, Tanzania’s Winifreda Gerard, Uganda’s Fujia Njemba and Senegal’s Apsatu Diallo complete the list of 10 players in this category.
