Awoniyi has missed Nigeria’s recent matches due to injury and could be sidelined for some time
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi may miss Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe in late November due to a minor injury, reports Soccer Ta.
Awoniyi missed the Super Eagles’ last two friendlies due to injury. He was sidelined for three weeks before returning to action against Liverpool last week.
However, the 26-year-old striker is not yet fully fit. Ahead of Nottingham Forest’s match against Aston Villa, Steve Cooper is not confident that the Nigerian will start as his situation is “complicated”.
He also does not know whether the Nigerian player will be available during the international break.
The Nottingham Post quoted Cooper as saying, “The issue of [Awoniyi’s] international assignments will be discussed next week.”
“Right now I’m just focused on what I can get out of him this weekend (against Aston Villa).”
Given the current situation, Awoniyi is unlikely to join the team. The former Union Berlin player will aim to return to full fitness before manager Jose Peceiro sacks the squad. Napoli star Victor Osimhen is also doubtful for the match. However, Terem Moffi and Victor Boniface could provide sufficient cover.
