Andy Murray claims he is ‘a bit strange’ after comeback win in Miami
Andy Murray has beaten former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini, as the Brit progresses to the second round of the Miami Open.
Murray fought back to beat Berrettini, 4-6 6-3 6-4, in a two hour and 47 minute match that saw his opponent appear light-headed as he stepped up to the service line.
In between some points Murray appeared to be laughing at his errors, and the former No.1 was questioned about this by Sky Sports pundit and former doubles partner Laura Robson.
“You were saying I need to be happier on the court in the interview beforehand – so if I’m laughing, that’s not OK, if I’m shouting, that’s not OK, if I’m flat like I was in Australia, that’s not OK,” explained Murray.
“It’s very hard for me to get the balance right. I’m very different on the tennis court. I’m not a robot. I’m a bit odd, a bit strange. But I play better when I’m like that.”
Murray’s victory over Berrettini was his fourth of the season, and the 36-year-old was asked about where this ranked in terms of performances so far in 2024, “I played well at the first tournament of the year in Brisbane, I felt good. The first match last week [against David Goffin in Indian Wells] was better as well.
“But in terms of the way I played in the important moments in that match, I did a good job. I was down 0-40 at the end, I think it was a 3-2 game, and I also created quite a lot of chances to go up a double break. I stayed tough there and played some good points, moved well, and dictated a lot of the match, which isn’t easy against him.”

Murray will now play 29th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who he lost to in straight sets at the Australian Open, in a bid to win back-to-back matches for the first time since August.

Andy Murray is always an interesting watch, from the incredible fighting spirit to his little quirks on court. Although Matteo Berrettini is coming back from an injury layoff, it is still a great victory for Murray especially after losing the first set. Murray will be very conscious of how lacklustre his defeat to Tomias Martin Etcheverry was at the Australian Open, so will likely be very hyped for his second round match in Miami.
