Babar Azam resigned as Pakistan’s all-format captain on November 15 (Wednesday) after he failed to lead the team into the semi-final of the 2023 World Cup.
Babar was given the leadership role for the first time in 2019 and led the team in 20 Tests, 43 ODIs and 71 T20Is. He won 10 Tests and 26 ODIs, but his biggest contribution came in the shortest format, where he posted a winning percentage of 59.15 and led the team to the semi-finals of the 2021 T20 World Cup and the final last year. lead. Pakistan also became his No. 1 ODI team for the first time under the Babar regime, having risen to the top spot in May this year.
Babar scored a total of 1500 runs as a skipper and averaged over 50 runs as a leader in Test cricket and over 60 runs in ODIs. However, his batting performance in T20Is has always been under scrutiny, with the opening batsman averaging 37.84 and a strike rate of 129.49.
However, after Pakistan failed to qualify for the Asia Cup finals, questions arose over his captaincy, and his leadership in the Super 4 match against India in particular came under scrutiny. Pakistan also doesn’t seem to be in the mood for the World Cup, with reports of division within the camp, with Pakistan reportedly split into two factions in opposition to Babar.
The 29-year-old announced his resignation on Wednesday, to much reaction. His last match as captain against England at the World Cup ended in a 93-point defeat.

Babar does the honourable thing and resigns. Not sure this is good for Pakistan cricket because the next Test captain will HAVE to be a stop-gap one, because it would be unfair to pitch in on an away tour to Australia… https://t.co/njYWBVjuRQ

With the burden and endless scrutiny that comes with being the captain of Pakistan off his shoulders, I suspect Babar Azam’s biggest years and achievements are ahead of him rather than behind him.

The agenda-driven-mafia and ex-cricketers who were running campaign against Babar Azam during WorldCup have won today. The resignation of Babar is a loss of Pakistani fans. Unfortunately PCB was equally involved in discouraging Babar courtesy whatsapp chat leak. #CWC23 pic.twitter.com/j2YnBAvRTn
