Glenn Maxwell criticised the mid-innings light shows that have been a feature of some of World Cup games after his Player of the Match performance in Australia’s record win over Netherlands at Delhi.
Maxwell had a great performance against the Netherlands, scoring a 40-ball century. This is his fourth fastest ever in ODI cricket and the fastest ever in a World Cup. He reached triple figures despite not receiving his first ball until the 41st over.
Australia easily defended their target with a total of 399-8 after 50 overs. Holland were only bowled out for 90 as Adam Zampa claimed his third four-wicket win in as many matches.
The final point difference was a whopping 309 points, the most ever recorded in a World Cup match.
However, it was not a perfect day for Maxwell as the Australian all-rounder suffered from the light show that took place during the Dutch innings. According to a reporter at the scene, Maxwell covered his eyes with his hands during the performance.

When asked about the display after the game, Maxwell explained that he was not a fan of the light show during games. “Well, something like this light show happened during a Big Bash match at Perth Stadium,” Maxwell said. “I had a really bad headache and it took a while for my eyes to adjust again. It’s the stupidest idea for a cricketer to think that his eyes need time to adjust when it’s coming at him so quickly. And I think we just lost a wicket and the lights at Perth Stadium are crazy.
“I was on the other side and it took years to get my sight back and I felt like I had a headache. So I try to cover it up and ignore it as much as I can, but this is a terrible problem. That’s a terrible idea. ”
