Watch: The West Indies women shocked the Aussies in their own backyard, chasing down a mammoth target of 213 in the second match of the three-match WI women vs AUS women T20I series, the highest ever that has been successfully chased in the history of women’s T20Is.
Hayley Matthews played the innings of a lifetime, scoring 132 runs off 64 balls in a 213 run chase. She accounted for over 60 per cent of the team’s runs, ably assisted by Stephanie Taylor, who scored 59 off 41 balls before Chinelle, with Henry and Shemaine Campbell leading the West Indies to a world-record victory. At one point, West Indies were 185-1 after 16.5 overs but needed 28 from 19 overs with nine wickets in hand. Taylor was dismissed on the next ball and Matthews was dismissed on his fifth ball of the 19th over, meaning things got tense.
With nine balls needed and two new batsmen in the field, it looked as if Australia had found just the opening they needed to take the match on.
However, the composure of Henry and Campbell enabled West Indies to cross the goal line with a one-ball lead, making it the greatest run chase in women’s T20I history. The previous highest run-chase record belonged to the England women’s team, who achieved the target of 199 against India five years ago in 2018.
Understandably, the entire West Indies team was overjoyed at the victory, which was evident from the celebrations when Henry came back for two and replaced the non-striker side.
With this win, West Indies draw the three-match T20I series at 1 win and 1 loss with one match remaining.
