Bangladesh rested their key players for three games in consideration of their workload in preparation for the high-profile event to be held in India in October. In the absence of Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das was appointed interim captain. Mushfiqur Rahim, Mehdi Hasan Miraz and pace trio Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmood and Shoriful Islam were also given leave.
Three uncapped players – Zakir Hasan, speedy Khalid Ahmed and wrist-spinner Rishad Hossain – have been nominated. However, the team is not lacking in experience as seniors such as Tamim Iqbal, Mahmudullah, Soumya Sarkar, Nurul Hasan and Sohan have returned.
Meanwhile, tourists are also flying to Dhaka with the second team to keep key players in shape for the World Cup. Lockie Ferguson was appointed captain. Regular captain Kane Williamson is absent as he continues to recover from a foot injury. He hopes he can join the group of New Zealanders at the big show.
Stock-up skipper Tom Latham, wicketkeeper-batsmen Devon Conway and Glenn Phillips, all-rounders Darryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner and pacer Matt Henry were all rested. Tim Southee, who injured his finger in the recently concluded ODI series against England, was not named as his availability for the World Cup is in doubt.
Uncapped Dean Foxcroft has been selected and will be making his ODI debut.
Mark Chapman and James Neesham were not eligible for selection as they were both expecting children.
