Serie A: Napoli’s Osimhen snubbed, Atalanta’s Lookman nominated for Gentleman Award

Two Nigerian internationals were among the best attackers in the Italian top flight last season, but only one was named Top Gentleman

Atalanta striker Ademola Lookman has secured a place among the 11 nominees for the prestigious Gentleman Fair Play Award 2023.

This award recognizes the player who demonstrated the most outstanding behavior during the previous season. Nominations will be determined by online voting. Former AC Milan and Newcastle star Sandro Tonali won the award last year.

Lookman’s appointment is not surprising given his exceptional debut season in Italy’s top flight.

The former Everton attacker joined Atalanta from RB Leipzig last summer and left his mark with some impressive performances. In his 31 games in Serie A he has scored 13 goals, which is surpassed only by Victor Osimhen, Lautaro Martinez, Bourlaier, Dia and Rafael Leand.

Lookman’s influence goes beyond scoring goals, however.

His behavior on the pitch is exemplary, and he is rarely seen getting into arguments with opponents or challenging the decisions of match officials. He received only his three yellow cards all season, showing amazing sportsmanship.

Interestingly, Lookman’s compatriot Osimhen, Serie A’s most valuable player and top scorer last season, did not make it to the shortlist.
