Onuachu “devastated” as transfer from Southampton falls through

The Nigerian striker joined Southampton in January but it turned out to be the wrong move

Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu is expected to remain at England champions Southampton this season after a move to Genk fell through, SoccerNet reports.

Onuachu left Genk for Southampton in January this year on a €18m deal. The tall Nigerian forward arrived at St. Mary’s with much buzz after scoring 85 goals and 10 assists in 134 appearances for Genk.

Unfortunately, this migration didn’t go as planned. Onuatu was relegated to the bench in a struggling Southampton side that were relegated last season.

The 29-year-old’s fortunes have not turned around this season as he has only played one match in the EFL Cup despite being relegated to the championship.

There are serious discussions going on about Onuachu wanting to leave Southampton this summer. Ligue 1 Metz made the switch in time, but the transfer did not materialize. Genk was also in talks – a player-swap deal was being discussed between Southampton.

However, according to Sacha Tavolieri, the deal is now broken. Belgium’s transfer window closes on September 6th. But a deal won’t go through as neither side has agreed to a deal, and Tavolieri says the Eagles forward is devastated by the current predicament.

I don’t think Southampton will improve his situation and a return to Genk would have given him more playing time.

The transfer windows for Turkey and Saudi Arabia are still open until mid-September. He still managed to get his turn.
