AFCON 2023: One-time winner belittles Nigerian team, backs South Africa to progress

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in the semi-finals of AFCON 2023 at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake.

Former South Africa midfielder Innocent Linda Buthelezi has contributed to Hugo Blues’ team’s victory against Nigeria’s Super Eagles tomorrow, Soccernet.ng reported.

Buthelezi, 54, was part of the 1996 AFCON winning team under late coach Clive Barker and helped the current South African team achieve success in Ivory Coast as well.

Buthelezi was a defensive midfielder during his playing days. He played for Mamelodi, he played for Sundowns, he played for Pirates, he played for Kaiser, he played for Chiefs and now Jose said there is a wave of overconfidence among Nigerians about the team that Peseiro has put together.

“What I noticed about Nigerians is that they always feel that they are better than us at soccer. It is in their nature and they It’s inevitable. You can’t imagine losing to a South African team that doesn’t have many big stars,” said the 27-time capped South African, as quoted by TimesLIVE. /strong> p>

Nine of South Africa’s starting XI against Cape Verde are playing at home and Buthelezi believes their hunger for success outweighs anything Nigeria has to offer.

“You will find something different in this group of Bafana players. They are hungry for success and their belief is much higher now than at the beginning of the tournament. We have a good squad that allows us to compete in the air and play on the ground. Also, Nigerian football is not what it used to be when we had players like Sunday Oliseh. ” he added.

The AFCON 2023 tournament saw South Africa and Nigeria achieve four clean sheets in five matches, highlighting the strong defensive qualities of both teams.
