Watch: Kagiso Rabada bowled Rohit Sharma with a perfect away-swinger on the third day of the Boxing Day Test at Centurion, ending his innings for an eight-ball duck.
South Africa took a huge lead in the first Test of the two-match series after Dean Elgar scored an astonishing 185 and Marco Jansen scored an unbeaten 84 to take their first-innings lead to 164 . India’s bowlers struggled in the field, with Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna in particular receiving penalties.
Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who came into bat again after being bowled out for 245 in the first innings, looked struggling in the early innings. Jaiswal was dropped by Aiden Markram on the first ball of Rabada’s innings and by the middle of the third over, Rohit was still unable to get on the scoreboard.
On the first day, Rohit had just reached five points when he holed out with a hook shot against Rabada. When he faced Rabada again in the third over of the innings, his off-stump was tested from the first four balls of the over and played to score a point. After the third ball, Rabada delivered a perfect ball.
It was pushed back from the ground, leaning just outside the stump line. The ball was delayed and straightened, going over the outside edge of Rohit and eliminating his off-stump with a brilliant strike.
As a result of this throw, Rohit returned to the pavilion and made an eight-ball duck, making India 5-1. Jaiswal then followed him too in less than three overs and Nandre flicked his ball short to the keeper from his burger.
At the time of writing, India were 44-2 with Shubman Gill (18) and Virat Kohli (14) hitting the goalposts.
