Watch: Alex Hales was once again hit in the groin while batting, this time falling victim to a well-aimed Spencer Johnson delivery which knocked the opener off his feet in pain.
Hales started the Sydney Thunder batting line-up in the BBL game against Brisbane Heat, but had to face a shot from Johnson. The ball came towards him from his left arm over the wicket and bounced off the surface. Hales tried to throw the ball to the side of his leg, but it missed and the ball slammed into his groin.
When the ball hit him and he fell to the ground on all fours, he immediately screamed in pain and was clearly uncomfortable. During his follow-through, Johnson ran up to Hales to make sure he was okay and smiled at the batter on the ground before returning to the attack.
Mr. Hales turned over and lay on the floor for a while until the pain subsided. Eventually he managed to get back on his feet and keep hitting, scoring 28 points before getting sent off by Matt Kuhneman.
This is not the first time Hales has been hit in a sensitive area while at bat in a franchise league. In the first edition of the 2023 Hundred, Hales was playing for the Trent Rockets and was hit twice by Reece Topley on back-to-back deliveries in the area. This incident caused quite a stir at the time.
Sydney Thunder were trailing by 15 runs in the chase against Brisbane Heat and were 157-9 after 20 overs.
