Watch: Usama Mir, unaware that the first ball of the second over of the 2023 BBL clash between Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars was a free hit, took a brilliant diving catch at third man, but was left with a sheepish smile after realising his efforts were in vain.
On Saturday (December 23), Mark Stekety gave Cameron Bancroft a no-ball on the front foot on the first ball of Sydney’s innings, resulting in a free kick. The batsman swung wildly at the re-delivered ball at a slower ball outside the off-stump. But as Mir charged forward, he mistimed the third man who made a spectacular catch. He immediately cheered, but was confused when his teammates did not join in, but instead asked for the ball to be released.
Later he was informed that it was a free kick, and Mir was amused.
At first, the batting line wanted to score one point, but the ball was delayed and they ended up giving up two runs. Sydney, who were chasing Melbourne’s 173, won by five wickets from him.
