Watch: In the first over of his first-class career, Somerset debutant Shoaib Bashir spun his off-breaks twice past the outside edge of Alastair Cook. Bashir has since been called up to England’s Test squad to tour India.

The following day, Bashir made his first-class debut in the County Championship against Essex. He came to the bowl for the first time and played against the well-rounded Alastair Cook. He had been in the game for 20 years and had scored over 26,000 runs and over 73,000 runs, not to mention highly regarded as a player of spin.
Bashir’s second ball hit the stumps. Cook tried to play forward defense, but the ball turned sharply and bounced, forcing Somerset wicketkeeper James Lew to retrieve the ball well above his waist.
The fourth ball spun past Cook again and then over Liu’s glove. Cook played the remaining overs and Basheer started with his maiden.
Bashir has since taken 10 first-class wickets and averaged 67. He was called up to England’s Lions squad to attend a training camp in the United Arab Emirates and impressed enough with the England management to receive a call-up. He will be aiming for a fifth consecutive Test series win in India.
