Cape Verde vs Nigeria: Super Falcons land in Praia ahead of WAFCON qualifier

Former African champion has established himself in Morocco for next year’s continental championship

A Nigerian delegation consisting of players, coaches and officials has arrived in Praia ahead of their second qualifying match for the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations against Cape Verde, Soccernet.ng reported.

The Super Falcons won the first leg 5-0, the worst defeat in the history of Cape Verdean women’s football.

Two goals from Uchenna Kanu and Esther Okoronkwo complemented Gift Monday’s impressive goals and gave the former WAFCON winners a huge advantage in Abuja.

The second leg is scheduled to be played on Tuesday, December 5, at the 15,000-seat Estadio Nacional de Cape Verde on artificial turf in Praia.

Nigeria, ranked 40th in the world and the highest on the continent, will be favorites for another victory against the Cape Verdeans, ranked 134th in the world.

To beat Nigeria and earn a ticket to WAFCON, Cape Verde needs to win by six goals.

The Super Falcons have never lost by three points to an African opponent in all competitions in their history.

Nigeria has never missed a WAFCON and has been crowned champions of the tournament 9 out of 12 times.

The Super Falcons were crowned African Queens in 2018, but finished fourth in the 2022 competition held in Morocco, losing the title to South Africa.

Morocco will once again host WAFCON 2024 and will be the perfect place for Nigeria to regain its lost honor.
