Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong has revealed that he wants to compete in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Ivory Coast next January. Soccernet.ng‘s report.
Trost-Ekong has been a regular for the Super Eagles since his debut in 2015. He formed a strong partnership with Leon Balogun, which eventually earned him the nickname “The Wall of Oyinbo”.
The 30-year-old defender has made 64 appearances for Nigeria since 2015 and also featured in the World Cup and African Cup of Nations.
However, Troost-Ekong has not represented Nigeria in the last two internationals. He last joined the team in September against Sao Tome and Principe.
In a previous report, Soccernet revealed that Troost-Ekko had a falling out with Peseiro, which was the reason he was not called up recently.
However, in a recent interview, Troost-Ekong said that one of his dreams is to play in next year’s AFCON in Ivory Coast.
“When I arrived at PAOK, I talked about it [at AFCON]. When I captained Nigeria, I worked hard as a team to qualify for AFCON, I said it was my dream to go to AFCON and win it,” Troost-Ekong told Oma Sports.
“Over the last few months I had to rethink everything. Going to AFCON would be a big sacrifice, especially considering the situation at my club.”
“Yes, I would like to do it again. But I have to feel grateful and accept the invitation. Let’s see. I will continue to work hard for the club. , we’ll do our best and see what happens.”
Currently, Peseiro’s preferred center backs seem to be Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi. Still, Troost-Ekong can contribute a lot in terms of leadership and experience.
