The 2nd WPL auction will be held in Mumbai on December 9th and 165 players are likely to be auctioned, including big names like Deandra Dottin, Shabnim Ismail, Chamari Athapaththu and more. Indian major players Devika Vaidya, S Meghana, Meghna Singh and Veda Krishnamurthy are among the shortlisted players.
The Women’s Premier League (WPL) was held earlier this year and was a huge success for women’s cricket. Five teams participated in the league: Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Giants, Royal Challengers Bangalore and UP Warriors. The Mumbai Indians won the first season, defeating the Delhi Capitals in the championship game.
22 players took part in the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League, which was held at three different venues in Mumbai. The dates for the second season, scheduled to be held in February, are currently being finalized byBCCI.
Additionally, the competition will be held in several cities such as Mumbai and Bangalore.
Foreign-born players are eligible to fill nine of the 30 spots on five teams. Only two players, Australia’s Kim Garth and West Indies’ Dottin, are offered the highest base price of Rs 500,000. Sri Lankan captain Athapasuthu, who is currently enjoying excellent batting form, estimates his base price at Rs 3 million.
A few days before the tournament, Deandra Dottin was dropped from the Gujarat Giants squad after signing a contract worth Rs 60 million ahead of her debut for the team. Dottin publicly denied the Giants’ claim that he was recovering from a medical condition at the time of the 2023 WPL.
With a base price of Rs 40 million, England wicketkeeper Amy Jones, Australian duo Annabelle Sutherland, Georgia Wareham and Ismail are in the second highest category. Like Garth, Sutherland and Wareham were selected for the Giants’ first year before being released.
Fifteen players from the Association Nations are also participating in the auction, including United States’ Tara Norris and Thai batsman Natakhan Chantham.
Gujarat Giants will participate in the auction with the maximum annual salary cap set at Rs 5.95 billion. Reigning champions Mumbai Indians received the lowest amount (Rs 2.1 billion) among all the five teams. Last season’s runners-up, Delhi Capitals, had a balance of Rs 2.25 crore on him.
