Watch: ‘Has the captain called him back?’ – Jake Fraser-McGurk was allowed to continue batting after being given out in the Sheffield Shield match between Victoria and South Australia at the Adelaide Oval.
One month after scoring the fastest goal in List century history off just 29 balls, Fraser McGuirk struck yet another amazing ball for South Australia. This time it’s Sheffield Shield. In response to Victoria’s 278, he smashed 12 boundaries in his 106-ball 101 to rescue South Australia from 16-4 to 252 all out.
However, the innings became controversial when he was dismissed on the 19th and caught at slip by Peter Hanscombe while attempting a cover drive against left-arm spinner Doug Warren. Although the Victorian team were satisfied with the referee’s decision, Fraser McGuirk did not leave the goal crease until his opponent allowed him to continue batting.
Fraser McGuirk explained what happened after the match. He said, “I missed it by probably a meter. The ball spun quite a bit and I think it came off Sam Harper’s glove before Peter Hanscomb could catch it.” Sometimes they (the opposing team) just go, “Hooray.” All I had to say was…and I couldn’t do that.I was seriously against it, but the referee started nodding, so I was in a bit of disbelief.
“So I started to walk away, but after a few seconds he (referee Michael Graham-Smith) changed the call because the Vic players thought they had made an unfortunate call. , I wasn’t very happy with that.

“But that’s the way the game is played, and in the end it was the right decision by the referee. That’s what you want.”
This reprieve allowed the highly-rated Fraser-McGurk to finally reach his 100th first-class appearance in first-class cricket.
