Holger Rune required immediate attitude adjustment, admits Boris Becker

Boris Becker said getting Holger Ruhn to adjust and improve his attitude is an important step in helping the young player’s development.

Ruhn appointed Becker as the new head coach earlier this year, and the talented Dane immediately saw an improvement in his performance.

They have now extended their relationship through the 2024 season, and both are optimistic about further developing his game.

But first there has to be a change in attitude, and this probably won’t surprise anyone since Rune is considered one of the greatest brats in tennis.

On Eurosport Germany’s podcast “Das Gelbe vom Ball”, Becker spoke about Loon’s coaching career: “The start was very intense as Holger’s place at the ATP Finals in Turin was at stake.”

“Frankly, he had a very bad summer. Out of nine tournaments, he lost in the first round eight times and once in the second round.

“After dropping a set and losing in the first round in Basel, everyone thought it would be difficult again. But he showed his fighting ability and definitely wanted to win.

“In preparation, we talked about why he lost matches. Is it his forehand or backhand or his attitude? If your attitude is not right, You don’t necessarily have to play tennis.

“He got better with each match. At least his attitude but also his style of play got better. In Basel we lost completely in the semi-finals. That wasn’t a good match either. In Paris things got much better. I got it.”

Lune was the defending champion at the Paris Games, but lost in the quarterfinals against the outstanding Novak Djokovic, whom he had defeated in the final the previous year.

Djokovic described the match as one of the toughest of the year and pointed to the influence Becker was already having on Loon’s game.

It was a strange experience for Becker, who coached Djokovic for three years.

“The duel with Novak Djokovic was strange for me at first,” Becker said. “Holger on the right, Novak on the left.

“But we hugged right away and I said to him, ‘Shatzi – we call each other darling – today I want to beat you with all my might. But I have a lot of respect for you,” and Novak said, “I have so much respect for you.” I didn’t expect anything else. ”

Holger Rune one of the ‘next big three’

Holger Ruhn has been attracting attention for his talent since he started playing as a junior, and now that he’s in the top 10, it would be incredibly difficult to take him out of the top 10.

But one person he really admires is Novak Djokovic. It’s not always easy.

After Roon’s performance at the ATP Finals, Djokovic did not hesitate to call the Dane one of the players who will dominate the sport in the future.

“Carlos, Jannik and Holger are the big three,” he said. “Call the next big three.

“You will continue playing this sport. You want to continue doing it forever.

“As long as I can beat them on the big stage.” I just keep going. Because why stop when you still have the biggest title?

“If they start kicking my ass, I will consider taking a short or even permanent break from professional tennis.”
