Naomi Osaka return to top would be ‘great’ for tennis, says legend

Grand Slam legend Martina Navratilova says it would be “great” for the tennis world if Naomi Osaka can get her career back on track.

Osaka has not played since September 2022 after retiring from tennis to become a mother.

At this point, however, she was already starting to suffer a bit, as she was suffering from anxiety-related mental health issues.

However, she is already planning a return to the WTA and has recently stepped up her training, with the four-time major winner confirming she will return in Brisbane in January.

This is music to Navratilova’s ears, and she says women’s tennis can only get stronger if Osaka gives her all.

Navratilova told WTA: “I’m really looking forward to seeing how this thing develops.”

“After being discharged from the hospital, it will take some time for her to get well and feel confident again.” I hope she does it slowly and not too quickly.

“I think by Indian Wells in early March she will be back to her wonderful form.”

“She won the title there in 2018. It’s great for the sport to see them back at the top.”

What are Naomi Osaka’s comeback plans?

It is no exaggeration to say that Naomi Osaka returned to tennis with big ambitions. She has her sights set on the Australian Open, where she plans to take part in the draw unless she is injured.

In this sense, Brisbane will be an important part of their preparations.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back on the court and competing,” Osaka said. “I always love starting the season in Brisbane and can’t wait to get back.

“Brisbane International is a great tournament and will make a great comeback this summer.”

Performance coach Florian Zitzelsberger said she’s not coming back just to improve her numbers.

“What makes it so exciting to work with her is the way she is now,” said Florian Zitzelsberger. “She wants to go back to world number one and she wants to win a Grand Slam.

“I think she’s a completely balanced person who is happy with herself.” She’s very down-to-earth, mature, and embracing the beauty of motherhood. ”
