South Africa got off to a good start in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers by defeating Benin Republic 2-1 on Saturday afternoon, reports Soccernet.ng.
Bafana Bafana and Nigeria are clear favorites ahead of Benin, Rwanda, Lesotho and Zimbabwe in the race to qualify for the next Mundial.
And on Thursday, after Nigeria’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Lesotho, South Africa made sure they didn’t fall into the same trap by repelling Benoise’s stubborn challenge.
Former Brighton striker Percy Tau gave Bafana Bafana the lead just two minutes into the game, and Chryso Johnson Mudau extended the lead to two points just before half-time.
Brest striker Steve Meunier scored Benin’s goal midway through the second half, reducing the Cheetahs’ lead.
However, the West Africans, led by former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, could not equalize despite creating many chances in the closing stages.
With this win, South Africa move to the top of Group C and will aim to consolidate their position against Rwanda on Tuesday 21 November.
Rwanda played a goalless draw with Zimbabwe in the first round, leaving both teams level on one point with Nigeria and Lesotho.
However, the Super Eagles could turn things around on Sunday when they take on Zimbabwe at Rwanda’s Hue Stadium.
The former African champions are looking for their fifth win in seven games against the Warriors.
