Watch: Marnus Labuschagne survived a marginal lbw call in Australia‘s semi-final chase against Australia at Eden Gardens, the ball narrowly showing up as umpires call on impact on review.
In the second bowling in Calcutta, South Africa dominated the ball. South Africa strong> elected to bat first and he was saved 24-4 by David Miller, who scored a sensational century for Australia, scoring his 213th goal for the team in the role. The scores appeared to be below average when the South African spinners came to bowl, but the development of events meant that the Australian batsmen were struggling significantly.
Aiden Markram sent David Warner into the attack with the first ball and took Wicket Maiden in the powerplay. Keshav Maharaj then bowled Travis Head with the first ball of the innings, leaving Australia still with 104 runs and a three-wicket lead.
Tabraiz Shamsi bowled in the next over, number 16, and after hitting a long ball to Labuschagne’s first ball, he sank two runs and hit a reversal for a two count. On the next ball, Shamsi found a big turn and sent the ball flying wide of the off-stump before the ball bounced off the surface and hit Labuschagne on his backpad.
The South African desperately appealed to Richard Kettleborough, who held his arm tightly to prevent him from giving it up. South Africa immediately opted for a review, and the ball was shown to have curved off-stump after bouncing, but barely hitting Labuschagne’s pads on the advice of the referee.
South African fans in the crowd and players on the field were stunned that the decision had not been made, and Labuschagne was visibly relieved. However, this decision did not cost South Africa many runs as they trapped him this time in the 6th over after Shamsi scored 15 more runs. This time, the referee’s decision was in favor of South Africa.
