Marnus Labuschagne has labelled the inclusion of the term ‘Bazball‘ in the Collins English Dictionary as “garbage”.
This word, which describes the attacking style of play of the England men’s Test team led by head coach Brendon McCullum, has been added to the HarperCollins dictionary as one of the top 10 new words of 2023. The definition of this word is “a style of Test cricket in which the batting team plays very aggressively”.
In an interview with cricket.com.au, he was surprisedDictionary Labuscagne said: I don’t know what it is. He honestly has no idea what he’s talking about. ”
‘Buzzball’ was coined by ESPNcricinfo UK editor Andrew Miller shortly after McCullum was appointed England Test head coach in 2022. Since his appointment, England have played in 13 of the 18 Test matches, marking a dramatic turnaround from their dismal performance in which they won just one of their previous 17 Test matches. The term has also been applied to other sports and fields, including politics.

During the 2023 Ashes series, Labuschagne said England’s “buzzball” style of playing Test cricket was beneficial to Australia. Speaking after the series-opening test at Edgbaston, Labuschagne said: “This way and these shots keep us in the game…That’s the advantage for us and the way they play.”
Despite the term’s popularity, McCallum himself has said he doesn’t like it, saying last year: “Because those stupid words that people throw around are actually quite thought out.” How the boys perform, when they put pressure on the bowlers, which bowlers they put pressure on. ”
HarperCollins named AI Word of the Year, ahead of Bazball, Deinfluencing, Nepobaby, Ultra Process, Canon Event, Debunk, Grieflation, Semaglutide and Ures .
