Watch: Quinton de Kock smashed a huge leg-side six off Jimmy Neesham to reach his fourth century in the 2023 World Cup in another brutal innings.
South Africa had New Zealand in the game first, giving de Kock another chance to get off to a good start. Quinton de Kock was the leading scorer at the start of this World Cup, having scored hundreds against Sri Lanka, Australia and Bangladesh. This time he played cautiously in the powerplay alongside Themba Bavuma, but accelerated as the innings progressed.
He reached 50 off 62 balls with Rachin Ravindra’s single, but needed 41 more balls to reach triple figures. In ’94, bowling against Jimmy Neesham, he hit a six on the last ball of the 36th over, reaching the milestone in style.
Facing a short ball on the leg side, de Kock stayed in the goal area and swung forcefully from behind to the leg side. The ball worked its way up, over the deep square boundary rope and back into the crowd in several rows.
De Kock maintained his momentum, reaching 114 off 116 balls before being dismissed by Tim Southee. He missed a slow ball straight to Glenn Phillips at the back point and ended the innings with the second highest score of the tournament so far.
De Kock scored 545 points in 7 games during the World Cup. He has a tournament average of 77.85 and a strike rate of 112.6. He has already surpassed Jacques Kallis’ record for most runs in a single tournament, his 485 runs in 2007, for South Africa.
At the time of his dismissal, South Africa were 238-2 with 10 overs remaining in the innings.
