Run Out Off Rebound – Dubious WBBL Dismissal Becomes Laws Of Cricket Puzzler After Bowler Uproots Stump

Watch: Mignon du Preez was controversially run out at the non-striker’s end by Amanda-Jade Wellington in a WBBL match in Adelaide today (October 29), sparking debate over ambiguity in the laws of the game.

Amanda Jade Wellington bowled Vol in six overs in Brisbane Heat’s game against Georgia. Vol appeared to cross the wicket for a flying throw and throw it to the ground. The ball bounced off non-striker Mignon du Preez, who went for a run, and fell onto the stumps. The bracket came off due to the impact of the ball rolling toward Wellington.

Realizing the risk of elimination, Du Preez returned to the non-striker side. Wellington picked up the ball and held it in his right hand while pulling the stumps off the ground with his left hand. She then hit the ball onto her unsheathed stumps while du Preez was still just outside the goal area.

Wellington looked expectantly at the referee who was distributing the ball on the pitch. There was no television referee for this match.

Law 29.2.1.5 states: “A wicket shall be considerably broken when the ball is completely cleared over the stumps, or when the stumps are struck from the ground, or when hit with the hand or arm by a fielder. “It shall be deemed that the “The ball is held in the hand so used, or the hand of the arm so used.”

Rule 29.2.1.6 further states: “If a fielder hits or pulls the stumps out of the ground, as in Rule 29.2.1.5, the wicket is also significantly broken.”

This means that if a wicket breaks and a fielder has to remove the stumps from the ground to break the wicket again, the ball must be in the same hand that removed the stumps.

In Wellington’s case, the ball was in his other hand. However, this law is unclear as it does not specifically state that the balls must be in the same hand and only refers to the previous law.
