New Zealand opted to bat first after winning the toss in Dharamsala, but would have instantly regretted this move when David Warner and Travis Head could have bombed Australia with sustained attacks .
After scoring 14 runs in the first two overs, Head and Warner unleashed their anger on Matt Henry in the third over. The first ball was sent over square leg by Warner for a six with his back knee falling to the ground. The second pitch was a no-ball, and the batters exchanged blows.
Head, who had returned to the Australian team after recovering from a broken hand, took advantage of the opportunity to take the lead with both hands. A free-hit long ball hit the stumps and hit the cow corner in the sixth over. As it turned out, Henry misstepped again, resulting in the next ball being another free kick.
This time, Henry tried the bouncer, but the result remained the same. Head waited on his back foot while hooking the third of two legal deliveries, a six, to mid-wicket. Australia he was 14-0 two balls ago, but in 2.2 overs he ran away to 35-0.
The pair did not give up and reached 50 in 4.1 overs and 100 in 8.5 overs. Warner and Head both reached their respective half-centuries and Australia’s score was 146-0 after 14 overs.
