The Super Eagles usually consist of more overseas-based players than home-based players
Former NPFL top scorer Mfon Udoh has revealed that foreign players tend to reject their own players in the national team because of their status, reported Soccer Net.
Nigeria is blessed with a large number of foreign football players, most of whom usually form the core of the national team. Occasionally, homegrown players are called up to the team, but end up serving as peripheral figures.
The Super Eagles camp is usually a lively place, as it is a second home for some of the players and an opportunity to meet close friends and acquaintances.
Former Anyimba striker Mfon Udoh, who holds three caps for Nigeria, has surprisingly revealed that the international camp is not as cozy and homey as it seems.
According to Udoh, most local players are looked down upon by foreign players, so they often feel isolated in the camp.
“Most foreign players tend to look down on us when they see local players like us.”Udoh said on the Abu Aziz podcast.
“I was in the Super Eagles before some of them and they get called up regularly so they feel like they own the place.”
“It is very difficult to play in the Nigerian league and get called up to the national team. All these things cause them to look down on us. And the fact that there is no money also adds to it. Give me a spur.
“Some domestic players earn between 500,000 and 600,000 compared to foreign players who earn up to 30,000,000.”
“Because of this inequality, some of them feel that we will be careless with money. That is why they tend to distance themselves from us. .”
Since Jose Peceiro took over as coach of the Super Eagles, he has shown some support for the NPFL. However, he hardly includes them in his team list.
The Super Eagles have struggled in the goalkeeping department for years, with none of the goalkeepers in the NPFL getting a chance to showcase their skills.
