Mohammed Shami played his first match of the 2023 World Cup and bowled Will Young with the first ball of the day, surpassing Anil Kumble’s World Cup record of 31 wickets.
With 36 scalps, Shami is currently third in India’s list behind Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan with 44 wickets each.
Shami then dismissed Rachin Ravindra (75) to break up a threatening partnership of 159 for the third wicket and took three more wickets at the death to finish with 5-51.
He becamethe first Indian and the ninth in history to take at least two five-wicket hauls in a World Cup (5-69 against Afghanistan in 2019) ). Mitchell Starc is the only other player to have three-fives.
Shami is also the fourth player to take five wickets in two different World Cups, after Glenn McGrath, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Starc.
As with the five-wicket haul, Shami is currently second on the list of bowlers who most frequently took four or more wickets in the World Cup. He has achieved it five times as well as Imran Tahir. They are only behind regular star Stark (six times). No one else in India has more than three.
Of all the bowlers with as many World Cup wickets as Shami, no one has a better average and strike rate than his 15.02 and 17.6. At the same time, hissavings rate of 5.09 is his second worst.
Kuldeep Yadav returns with 10 wins, 0 losses, 73 losses, and 2 losses. This is the record for the most goals conceded in a World Cup match. He took 1-72 in 10 overs against England at Edgbaston in 2019.
Mitchell also scored his first hundred against India in the 2023 edition. He cleared Hashmatullah Shahidi’s 80 by a distance. Ravindra also ranks third in terms of most runs against India.
The 159-run partnership between Mitchell and Ravindra is the best against India yet. Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai’s 121 is the only other partnership this century against them.
New Zealand were bowed out for 273, highest score against India in the 2023 World Cup. Like his previous two records, it surpassed Afghanistan’s 272 wins and 8 losses.
